Topic 1 - Diffusion Flashcards
1
Q
What is diffusion?
A
The spreading of the particles of a gas, or of any substance in solution (a solute)
2
Q
How do the particles move?
A
Randomly
3
Q
What is the overall movement of particles?
A
From a high concentrated area to a low concentrated area
4
Q
What is a concentration gradient?
A
The difference in concentration between two areas
5
Q
What does the larger the difference in concentration mean?
A
The faster the rate of diffusion
6
Q
An increase in what causes the particles to move faster?
A
Temperature
7
Q
Give examples of diffusion.
A
- Oxygen and glucose into the cells of the body from the bloodstream for respiration
- Carbon dioxide into actively photosynthesising plant cells
- Gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide in opposite directions in the lungs)
- Simple sugars and amino acids from the gut through cell membranes
8
Q
What type of process is Diffusion?
A
Passive
