Topic 4 - Factors Affecting Transpiration Flashcards
What are the limiting factors of Transpiration?
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Air flow
- Light intensity
How does temperature effect transpiration?
As temperature increases, the molecules move faster so more water evaporates and the rate of diffusion of water from the leaf also increase. As temperature increase, the rate of photosynthesis also increase so more stomata are open
How does humidity effect transpiration?
The rate of diffusion of water from the leaf is faster in dry air than in damp air
How does air flow effect transpiration?
Windy conditions will increase the rate of evaporation and keep a steep concentration gradient between the inside and the outside of the leaf by blowing away water vapour
How does light intensity effect transpiration?
More light means there will be an increase in the rate of photosynthesis
When is transpiration more rapid?
In hot, dry or windy conditions
What are features of a plants leaf?
A waxy, waterproof cuticle that can be very thick and shiny in hot environments
Where about are most of the stomata on a leaf?
On the underside
