Topic 3 - How the Digestive Sytem Works Flashcards
What are digestive enzymes produced by?
Specialised cells in glands and in the lining of the small intestine
Where do the digestive enzymes pass out of?
Out of the glands and into the cavity of the digestive system and work outside of the cell
What do the digestive enzymes come into contact with?
Food so that it is digested
What does the digestive system do?
- Breaks down food into smaller pieces to increase the surface area for the enzymes to work on
- Mixes the food with digestive juices that contain the enzymes
- Has muscles to move the food along
- Has areas with different levels of pH
- Absorbs the small, soluble food molecules into the blood in the small intestine
What is each type of food digested by?
A specific enzyme
What is amylase?
A carbohydrase
What is amylase produced by?
The salivary glands, the pancreas and the small intestine
What do amylase do?
Catalyses the digestion of starch into sugars in the mouth and small intestine
What is protease produced by?
The stomach, the pancreas and the small intestine
What does protease do?
Catalyses the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in the stomach and small intestine
What is lipase produced by?
The pancreas and the small intestine
What does lipase do?
Catalyses the breakdown of lipids to fatty acids and glycerol
