What does the human circulatory system consist of?
- Blood

What is blood?
A tissue
What does plasma contain?
- Red blood cells
- White blood cells
- Platelets
What does blood plasma transport?
- Carbon dioxide from the organs to the lungs
- Soluble products of digestion from the small intestine to other organs
- Urea from the liver to the kidneys, where urine is made
What are red blood cells?
Biconcave discs
What do red blood cells not contain?
A nucleus
What is the red pigment in red blood cells called?
Haemoglobin
What do the red blood cells do with the haemoglobin?
Combines it with oxygen which forms oxyhaemoglobin in the lungs
What do the red blood cells carry?
Oxygen to all of the organs where the oxyhaemoglobin splits back into haemoglobin and oxygen
What do white blood cells contain?
A nucleus
What do the white blood cells do?
Form part of the body’s defence system against microorganisms
What do some white blood cells produce?
- Antibodies
- Antitoxins
What do some white blood cells do?
Engulf microorganisms
What are platelets?
A small fragment of cells
What do platelets not contain?
A nucleus
