Topic 3 - Catalysts and Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
What are chemical reactions controlled by in cells?
A
proteins known as enzymes
2
Q
What do biological catalysts do?
A
Speed up reactions
3
Q
What are enzymes?
A
Large proteins
4
Q
What is vital for an enzymes function?
A
Its shape
5
Q
Where does a substrate molecule fit?
A
The active site
6
Q
What might happen to the substrate?
A
- May be joined to another molecule
- May be broken down into smaller molecules
7
Q
What can enzymes do?
A
- Build large molecules from many smaller ones, such as building starch from glucose molecules
- Change one molecule into another one, such as converting one type of sugar into another
- Break down large molecules into smaller ones- the digestive enzymes do this
8
Q
What does metabolism mean?
A
The sum of all the reactions that take place in a cell or in the whole body
