Topic 4 Exercise # Flashcards
Why do you need more respiration when you exercise
Muscles need energy from respiration to contract
When you exercise muscles contract more frequently so more respiration to create more energy
What does the increase in respiration in your cells mean
You need to get more oxygen into them
Why does breathing rate and breath volume increase during exercise
To get more oxygen into the blood
Why does your heart rate increase during exercise
To get oxygenated blood around the body faster and removes CO2 more quickly at the same time
What causes you to respire anaerobically when doing exercise
When you do really vigourous exercise like sprinting your body can’t supply oxygen to the muscles quickly enough
What does respiring anaerobically cause when doing exercise
Lactic acid buildup in the muscles
What do long periods of exercise cause
Muscle fatigue when the muscles get tired and stop contracting efficiently
What does anaerobic respiration leed to
Oxygen debt
What is oxygen debt
The amount of extra oxygen your body needs to react with a buildup of lactic acid to move it from cells
Oxygen reacts with lactic acid to form
CO2 and water
Why do you need to keep recording her for a while after stopping doing exercise
To get more oxygen into the blood which is transported to the muscles for oxygen debt
What causes the pulse and breathing rate to stay high
If there are high levels of lactic acid in CO2
How does the liver cope with lactic acid
The blood that enters muscles transports the lactic acid to the liver and is converted back into glucose
