Topic 2 Circulatory system - Blood + Flashcards
What is blood
A tissue
What is the job of red blood cells
To carry oxygen
What is the shape of red blood cells
Bioconcave disc which gives a large surface area for absorbing more oxygen
Do red blood cells have nucleus
No as it allows them more room to carry oxygen
What gives red blood cells the red pigment
Haemoglobin
What happens to haemoglobin in the lungs
It binds with oxygen to become oxyhemoglobin
What happens to oxyhaemoglobin in the body tissues
The oxyhemoglobin splits up into oxygen and haemoglobin to release oxygen to the cells
What are white blood cells jobs
To defend against infection
Phagocytosis
Change shape to engulf microorganisms
What does plasma carry
Amino acids
Glucose
Proteins
Antibodies/antitoxins
Hormones
Redblood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
What is artificial blood
Substitute for blood used if someone has lost lots of blood
Contains saline
Maintains the volume whilst pumping the remaining red blood cells around the body
What do platelets do
Help the blood clot
What are platelets
Small fragments of cells have no nucleus
What can lack of platelets cause
Excessive bleeding and bruising
What colour is plasma
Pale straw coloured liquid
