Topic 2 The Lungs % Flashcards
Where are the lungs
In the thorax
What separates the thorax from the top part of the body
The diaphragm
What surrounds the lungs
They are protected by the ribcage and are surrounded by pleural membranes
Where does the air that you breathe in go
Down the trachea which splits into two tubes called bronchi (each one is a bronchus) one going to each lung
What do the bronchi split into
Smaller tubes called bronchioles
Where do bronchioles end
Small bags called alveoli where gas exchange takes place
What is the blood passing next to the alveoli like
Contains lots of carbon dioxide a very little oxygen as it is just returned to the lungs from the rest of the body
What happens in the alveoli
Oxygen defuses out of the alveolus into the blood which had a low concentration
What does carbon dioxide diffuse out of
Condenser defuses out of the blood into the alveolus to be breathed out
What happens when blood reaches body cells
Oxygen is released from the red blood cells and diffused into the body cells
What happens to the carbon dioxide that is diffused out of body cells into the blood
Is carried back to the lungs
What is breathing rate
Breaths per minute
