Topic 1 Cells % Flashcards
Types eukaryotic cells
Plant and animal cells
Types of prokaryotic cell
Bacteria
What is the role of the nucleus
Contains genetic material that controls activities of the cell
Role of cytoplasm
Gel like substance
Where most chemical reactions take place
Contains enzymes that control chemical reactions
Role of cell membrane
Holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out
Role of mitochondria
Where most aerobic respiration takes place
Respiration transfers energy the cell needs to work
Role of ribosomes
Where proteins are synthesised
What is the role of the cell wall. ONLY IN PLANT CELLS
Supports and strengthens the cell
Made of cellulose
Role of permanent vacuole PLNT CELL ONLY
Contains cell sap
Weak solution of sugar and salts
Role of chloroplasts. PLANT CELL ONLY
Contains chlorophyll which absorbs light for photosynthesis
Where photosynthesis occurs which provides food for the plant
What organelle does a bacteria cell contain
Cytoplasm
Cell membrane
Cell wall
Don’t have true nucleus but dna loop
May also have plasmids- small rings of dna
Differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
Prokaryotic cells don’t contain a nucleus or membrane bound organelle
Adv and disadv of light microscopes
Use light and lenses to form an image of a specimen and magnify it
They let us see individual cells and large subcellular structures like nuclei
Adv and disadv of electron microscopes
Use electrons instead of light form and image
How much higher magnification the light microscopes
Also have a higher resolution (sharper image)
Let’s you see smaller things in more detail e.g. mitochondria and chloroplasts
Magnification equation
Magnification = image size / actual size
