Topic 2 Plant Cell Organisation + Flashcards
What are plant organs made of
Tissues
What is the epidermal tissue
Covers the whole plant
What is the palisade mesophyll tissue
Part of the leaf where photosynthesis happens
What is spongy mesophyll tissue
Contains big air spaces to allow gases to diffuse in and out of cells
What are the phloem and xylem
They transport things like water, minerals and food around the plant (through roots stems and leafs)
What is the meristem tissue
Found at the growing tips of shoots and roots and is able to differentiate into lots of different types of plant cells allowing the plant to grow
What is the waxy cuticle for
Covers the epidermal tissue to help reduce water loss by evaporation and stops the sun from damaging the plant
Why is the upper epidermis transparent
So that light can pass through it to the palisade layer
Why does the palisade layer have lots of chloroplasts
Because it’s where photosynthesis takes place and is near the Top of the leaf so can get lots of light
What do the phloem and xylem form
A network of vascular bundle which deliver water and other nutrients to the entire leaf and take away the glucose produced by photosynthesis
They also support the structure
What are the tissue of the leaf adapted for
Efficient gas exchange
The lower epidermis is full of holes called stomata which let out CO2 diffuse directly into the leaf
What is the opening of the stomata controlled by
Guard cells
What do the air spaces in the spongy mesophyll tissue increase
The rate of diffusion of gases
