What is a risk factor
Things that are linked to an increase in the likelihood that a person will develop certain disease
What can risk factors be caused by
Lifestyle
Environment
Substances in the body
What risk factors cause non communicable diseases
Several different risk factors interacting with each other
What does smoking cause
Cardiovascular disease, lung disease and lung cancer
What does smoking do to the lungs and arteries
Damage is the walls of the arteries and the cells in the lining of the lungs
What does obesity cause
Type two diabetes
by making the body less sensitive or resistant to insulin meansing that it struggles to control the concentration of glucose in the blood
What does drinking too much alcohol cause
Liver disease
too much alcohol can affect brain function it can damage the nerve cells in the brain cause in the brain to lose volume
What does smoking and drinking whilst pregnant do
Cause lots of health problems for the unborn baby
What does exposure to certain substances or radiation cause
Cancer
What are things that cause cancer called
Carcinogens
