Topic 1: Introduction to Anatomy Flashcards
What is Anatomy?
- Study of internal & external body structures
- Relationships between structures
example: bone + muscle
What is Gross Anatomy
visible to the naked eye
example: heart, lungs, kidney, bones
What is microscopic anatomy?
-Deals with structures too small to be seen with the naked eye
What are the subdivisions of microanatomy?
Cytology and Histology
What is Cytology?
Study of the internal structures of individual cells
What is Histology?
Study of tissues (groups of cells)
What are the levels of organization? (simple to complex)
- Chemical
- Cellular
- Tissue
- Organ
- Organ system
- Organism
What is the chemical level?
atoms
e.g. H + O atoms
atoms form to join molecules
example: water
What is the cellular level?
- Molecules form organelles which form cells
- Cells are the smallest unit of living things
- All cells contain chemicals but their functions may differ
example: red blood cells, neurons, muscle cells
What is the tissue level?
- Groups of similar cells that have a common function.
- There are 4 major types
What are the 4 major types of tissue levels?
CMEN
Connective Tissue
Muscle
Epithelium
Nervous system
What is the Organ level?
2 or more tissues working together for a common function
- e.g. stomach
- all 4 major tissue types
- function = digestion
What is the organ system level?
Organs that work together to accomplish a common purpose
e.g.
respiratory system
- lungs, trachea, etc
function = respiration
What is the Organism level?
all systems function together together to maintain life!
Which organ system includes the bones and cartilages?
The skeletal system
