Topic 1 - Fazey and Hardy Flashcards
what was criticism 1?
model uses the term stress, arousal and anxiety to mean the same thing
F&H - should be treated differently because they have different effects - difference between cognitive and somatic anxiety
what was criticism 2?
not been enough research investigating the effects of stress or different types of anxiety on performance ( limited evidence on inverted U)
what was criticism 3?
does not predict validity - does not explain how athletes will perform in highly stressful situations
there would be a dramatic drop not a steady one
what happens when cognitive anxiety is low?
arousal impacts performance following the inverted U model
what happens when cognitive anxiety is moderate or high?
increasing arousal beyond the optimal point will lead to an extreme decline in performance - athlete must significantly reduce arousal levels to regain even a mediocre level of performance
What did Fazey and Hardy also extended to suggest?
complexity of task and self confidence further influence the relationship between anxiety and performance (catastrophe takes place at lower arousal for mor difficult tasks or when athlete is less confident)
how many basketball players were in Hardy and Parfitt’s study?
Eight
where wer the basketball players from?
North Wales
what did the basketball players do?
they performed a free throw take one day before an important competition (high cognitive anxiety) and then one day after (low). They also increased arousal by asking them to do a shuttle run before hand
what were the results of the basketball player study?
the results supported the catastrophe model - participants’ maximum performance was highly and minimum performance was lower with high cognitive anxiety
