Q

Define Attrition and Describe it’s Clinical Presentations (5)

A

the loss of tooth substance or tissue caused by tooth-to-tooth contact

  • enamel and dentine wear down at same rate
  • flattened cusps and incisal edges
  • shiny amalgams
  • in a slow process - secondary dentine forms
  • increased tooth mobility

Q

Define Erosion, it’s Causes (5) and Describe the Clinical Appearance (3)

A

irreversible, progressive loss of dental hard tissue by an acidic chemical process not involving bacteria

causes:
- intrisinc/extrinsic acids
- oral hygiene products
- medications
- eating disorders - anorexia and bulimia
- xerostomia - dry mouth, lack of saliva flow, enamel and insist edge worn out

  • loss of surface anatomy
  • increase incisal translucency
  • chipping or edges

generally the worn surfaces are not in contact

Q

Define Abfraction

A

loss of tooth surface from occlusal forces causing compressive and tensile stress
- looks like teeth are on a ledge

Q

How can you Monitor Progress? (4)

A

*Sensitivity - if yes, secondary dentine hasn’t layed down
*Staining
*Study Models - compare depths/heights
*Silicone Putty - make comparison

Q

How can you Prevent Attrition Getting Worse?

A

Splint (like a retainer)
- vacuum formed on model of one arch = full coverage
- prevent further wear
- quick and easy
- can be used as a tray

composites
