Gingival Recession Flashcards
Describe Appearance of Gingival Recession.
gingival margin is positioned apical to the CEJ with exposure to root surface
if distance from CEJ is about 3mm
Where is it more common?
maxillary 1st molars and mandibular central incisors
Aetiology of Gingival Recession (7)
*anatomical position of tooth
*extent of cortical bone
*orthodontic tooth movement
- creation of dehiscence
*periodontal disease
*trauma - foreign bodies, habits - hard toothbrush, nail biting, chemicals
* age
*smoking
Links between Recession and Keratinised Tissue
- more likely where gingivae are thin
Links between Periodontal Disease and Recession
the bone loss brings apical migration of soft tissues
Effects of Gingival Recession (7)
fear of tooth loss
plaque accumulation
bleeding
aesthetics
root caries
abrasion
pain from dentine hypersensitivity
How do you Restore Aesthetics?
- crowns, veneers, root coverage
- use a removable gingival veneer - silicone or acrylic
- mask to cover interdental spaces
surgery - connective tissue graft
