What are common causative organisms?
Adenovirus

What are the symptoms of tonsillitis?
Odynophagia
Dysphagia
Pyrexia
Red, swollen tonsils
What score system is used to assess need for abx?
CENTOR
How is tonsillitis managed?
Analgesia
Ensure hydration
Tonsillectomy
What are indications for a tonsillectomy?
>/=7 episodes in a year >/=5 per year for 2 years Suspsected malignancy Presence of sleep apnoea Previous peritonsillar abscess
What are primary complications (<24hr) of a tonsillectomy?
Haemorrhage
Pain
What are secondary complications (>24hr) of a tonsillectomy?
Haemorrhage (due to infection)
Pain
What is a complication of tonsillitis?
Peritonsillar abscess
What is a peritonsillar abscess also known as?
Quinsy
What are the clinical features of a peritonsillar abscess?
Severe sore throat
Odynophagia
What is seen on examination in a peritonsillar abscess?
Extensive erythema
Soft palate swelling
Deviated uvula
How is a peritonsillar abscess managed?
IV abx
Regular analgesia
Needle aspiration/incision+drainage
