What is chronic otitis media?
Chronic infection of middle ear associated with tympanic membrane perforation
What are risk factors for chronic otitis media?
Recurrent acute otitis media
Traumatic perforation of tympanic membrane
Grommet insertion
Craniofacial abnormalities
What are symptoms of chronic otitis media?
Ear discharge for >6weeks
No fever
No ear pain
What is the examination finding in chronic otitis media?
Otoscopy - perforated tympanic membrane
What are the types of chronic otitis media?
Mucosal
- secondary to a tympanic membrane perforation
Squamous
- discharge due to a cholesteatoma
Where is a ‘safe’ perforation?
Tubotympanic (anteroinferior) area
Low risk of cholesteatoma
Where is an ‘unsafe’ perforation?
Atticoantral (posterosuperior) area
High risk of cholesteatoma
