What is otitis media?
Infection of the middle ear
What is the pathophysiology of otitis media?
Inflammation of eustachian tube - stasis of mucous drainage from ear - good for bacteria growth
What are risk factors for acute otitis media?
Young age
Recent upper respiratory infection
Craniofacial abnormality
Family history
What are the symptoms of otitis media?
Ear pain
Fever
What are the investigations for suspected otitis media?
Otoscopy
- red, bulging tympanic membrane
How is otitis media managed?
Oral analgesia
Often resolves in 4 days without antibiotcs
Can give oral antibiotics
What advice is given to patients with acute otitis media?
Most resolve without antibiotics but return in 2/3 days if not better
Avoid air travel - can worsen pain
