What makes up polyps?
A mixture of loose connective tissue, oedema , inflammatory cells, glandular cells and capillaries
What are nasal polyps?
Benign swellings of the mucosal lining of the paranasal sinuses
What is the pathophysiology of nasal polyps?
Chronic mucosal inflammation causes swelling
What are risk factors for developing nasal polyps?
Asthma
Allergic rhinitis
Chronic sinusitis
Churg-strauss syndrome
What are the symptoms of nasal polyps?
Nasal blockage Watery rhinorrhoea Post-nasal drip Loss of smell Facial pain
How are nasal polyps investigated?
Anterior rhinoscopy
- visulaise polyps
Nasal endoscopy
What is the normal appearance of nasal polyps?
Smooth
Pale
Bilateral
Arise from middle meatus + turbinates
What are red flag features of polyps?
Unilateral
Ulcerating
Bleeding
How are nasal polyps managed?
Intranasal corticosteroid for 1 month
What follow is given to patients with nasal polyps?
Reviewed at one month - continue for further 3 months if working
