URTI - viral

Allergic rhinitis
How does acute sinusitis present?
Frontal headache / facial pain
Pain worse on bending forward
+/- purulent nasal discharge
+/- fever
How is acute sinusitis managed conservatively?
Most resolve in 7-10 days
Analgesia + fluids
Steam inhalation
How is acute sinusitis managed medically?
Steroid nasal spray
Abx
Who gets antibiotics in acute sinusitis?
Frontal sinusitis
Severe symptoms
Symptoms lasting >2.5 weeks
Risk of serious complications
What is chronic sinusitis?
> 3 months of symptoms
OR
> 3 episodes in one year
How does chronic sinusitis present?
Post nasal drip
Frontal headache / facial pain
Blocked nose
How is chronic sinusitis managed?
Same as acute
- analgesia + fluids
- intranasal steroids
- antibiotics
What is chronic sinusitis associated with?
Nasal polyps
Vasomotor rhinitis
Is acute sinusitis more commonly bacterial or viral?
Viral
How long do acute viral sinusitis symptoms last?
<10 days
How long do acute bacterial sinusitis symptoms last?
> 10 days but <40 days
