Inflammation of the pharynx
What are the common organisms of pharyngitis?
Group A strep
EBV
Adenoviruses
Influenza viruses
What are the risk factors for pharyngitis?
Colonisation of Group A strep
Immunocompromised
Child
What are the symptoms of pharyngitis?
Sore throat
Fever
Rhinorrhoea (viral)
+/- lymphadenopathy
When is bacterial pharyngitis more common?
Winter
Spring
When is viral pharyngitis more common?
Summer
Autumn
What investigation can be done for pharyngitis?
Rapid antigen test - group A strep
What scoring systems can you use to assess need for abx?
FeverPAIN
CENTOR
What is the management of pharyngitis?
Self-limiting disease
Supportive management
- fluids
- paracetamol
- rest
Antibiotics can be delayed or given if indicated
What is the follow up for pharyngitis?
If not improved after 3-4 days, consider alternate diagnosis
