what epithelial do
physical protection (abrasion, dehydration) , control permeability, provide sensation ( touch receptor)
exocrine secretions
secretions discharged the surface through ducts
endocrine secretions
secretions released into the surrounding tissue fluid and blood (ductless)
mode of secretion: merocrine
uses mucus (saliva, digestive system)
mode of secretion: apocrine
cell looses cytoplasm containing the secretion (pits, milk)
mode of secretion: holocrine
cell bursts and dies to release secretion (oil of skin and hair)
endocrine glands
release inside body: pituitary, parathyroid, thyroid, thymus, adrenal, pancreas, ovary, testes
exocrine glands
release to surface of epithelium: salivary, mammary, sebaceous (oil)
cell adhesion molecules
glue holding cells together
tight junction
proteins on cell membranes interlock
gap junction
channel proteins bund leaving a tube for communication
desmosomes
intracellular cement for places that twist, bend, etc
basement membrane
all cells connect to this somehow
epithelial renewal and repair
cells only live a day or two so continuous cell division to stem cells found near basement membrane
epithelium
layers of cells that cover internal or external surfaces
mucous membrane
keeps epithelia moist
serous membranes
creates visceral and parietal linings
cutaneous membrane
covers the surface of the body
synovial membrane
creates synovial fluid to lubricate joints
extracellular matrix
extracellular protein fibers (collagen and elastin) and ground substance (fluid around cells)
connective tissue
blood, lymph, cartilage, bone, adipose, dense CT (tenons, ligaments)
red blood cells
erythrocytes
white blood cells

fibroblasts
loose and dense connective tissue
4 responses to injury
swelling, warmth, redness, and pain
mechanism during injury
release of histamine causing blood vessels to dilate increasing blood flow to damaged area
regeneration
fibroblasts create a collagen patch to close large wounds - scar
over time the tissue will remodel to become normal in appearance
