Tissue and Histology-Fluid connective tissue Flashcards
Fluid Connective Tissue-Blood, what is the matrix?
plasma
Fluid Connective Tissue-Blood, what are plasmas characteristics?
◦ Liquid and lacks fibers.
◦ Matrix formed by other tissues, unlike other types of connective tissue.
◦ Moves through vessels, but both fluid and cells can move in/out of the
vessels.
Fluid Connective Tissue-Blood, what are formed elements?
Red cells (erythrocytes), white cells (leukocytes), and platelets
Fluid Connective Tissue-Blood, what is Haemopoietic tissue?
. Forms blood cells
. Found in bone marrow
Fluid Connective Tissue-Blood, what are the 2 types of bone marrow?
Red
Yellow
Fluid Connective Tissue-Blood, what is Red bone marrow?
haemopoietic tissue surrounded by a framework of reticular fibers. Produces red and white cells
Fluid Connective Tissue-Blood, what is yellow bone marrow?
yellow adipose tissue
Fluid Connective Tissue-Blood, what happens to red bone marrow as children grow older?
yellow marrow replaces much of red marrow.
Fluid Connective Tissue-Blood, what is a red blood cell?
biconcave disc, no nucleolus, contains haemoglobin.
It transports O2 and CO2
Fluid Connective Tissue-Blood, what is a White blood cell?
Spherical cells with a nucleus
there are 5 types of white blood cells, all with different functions.
Fluid Connective Tissue- White Blood cells (Granulocytes), what is a Neutrophil?
Phagocytizes microorganisms and other substances.
Fluid Connective Tissue- White Blood cells (Granulocytes), what is a Eosinophil?
Releases chemicals that reduce inflammation, attacks certain worm parasites.
Fluid Connective Tissue- White Blood cells (Granulocytes), what is a Basophil?
Releases histamine, which promotes inflammation, and heparin, which prevents clot function.
Fluid Connective Tissue- White Blood cells (Agranulocytes), what is a Lymphocyte?
Produces antibodies and other chemicals responsible for destroying microorganisms.
contributes to allergic reactions, graft rejection, tumour control, and regulation of the immune system.
Fluid Connective Tissue- White Blood cells (Agranulocytes), what is a monocyte
Phagocyte cell in the blood; leaves the blood and becomes a macrophage, which phagocytizes (ingest) bacteria, dead cells, cell fragments and other debris.
