Definitions and organ systems Flashcards
What is the definition of anatomy?
the scientific discipline that investigates the body’s structure
What is the definition of Physiology?
the scientific discipline that investigates the body’s function
what is Gross?
structure’s examined without a microscope
What is Microscopic?
structures examined through a microscope
what are the 3 types of Gross study?
- Regional
- systemic
- surface
What do they entail?
Gross
- Regional- studied area by area
- Systemic- studied system by system
- Surface- external form and relation to deeper structure as x ray in anatomic imaging
what are the 2 type of Microscopic study?
- cytology
2. Histology
What do they entail?
Microscopic
- cytology- cells
2. Histology- tissue
What is tissue?
A group of similar cells working together to perform a function.
What is an organ?
one of more tissue’s working together to perform a function
what is an organ system?
Number of organs working together to perform a function
What is an organism?
a functioning, living creature
what are the functions of the skeletal system?
protection, support, movement, production of blood cells and storing minerals and fat.
What is the function of the muscular system?
movement, posture and body heat.
what is the function of the Digestive system?
performs the mechanical and chemical processes of digestion, absorption of nutrition and eliminates waste products.
What is the function of the Nervous system?
regulatory system, detects sensations and controls movements, physiological processes and intellectual function.
What is the function of the endocrine system?
regulatory system, influences metabolism, growth, reproduction and many other functions.
What is the function of the urinary system?
removes waste products from the blood and regulates blood pH, ion balance and water balance.
what does the skeletal system consist of?
bones, ligaments, cartilage and tendons
what does the muscular system consist of?
tendons and muscles
what does the digestive system consist of?
mouth, oesophagus, stomach, intestines and accessory organs
what does the nervous system consist of?
brain, spinal cord, nerves and sensory receptors
what does the endocrine system consist of?
glands (e.g. pituitary gland) that secrete hormones
what does the urinary system consist of?
kidneys, urinary bladder and ducts that carry urine
