Human anatomy-Muscle terminology, shape, names and levers Flashcards
what is a tendon?
attach muscles to bones
what is an origin?
usually most stationary,
proximal end of muscle
Some muscles have multiple origins known as heads
what is an insertion?
mobile/ distal end that undergoes greatest
movement
what is a belly?
the part of the muscle between the origin and
insertion
what is an agonist?
Muscle that completes a certain movement is called the agonist
what is an antagonist?
a muscle acting opposite is called the antagonist
what is a synergists?
members of a group of muscles are called synergists
what is a prime mover?
if one muscle plays a major role it is called the prime mover
what is a fixator
Fixators stabilise the origin of a prime mover
Pennate are the 3 type of pennate muscle?
Bipennate
Semipennate
Multipennate
what are Bipennate muscles?
Fibres arranged like barbs of a feather on two sides of a common tendon
what are Semipennate muscles?
Muscle with fibres on one side of the tendon
what are multipennate muscles?
Muscle with fibres arranged at many Places around Central tendon
what is a straight muscle?
Fibres organised parallel to
the long axis of the muscle
what is an orbicular muscle?
Fibres arranged in a circle
around an opening
what is a quadrate muscle?
Four sided with right angles.
what is a rhomboidal muscle?
Four sided with no right angles
what is a fusiform muscle?
Spindle shape, tapered either end
what is a trapezium muscle?
Four sided with no right angles and no parallel sides
what is a triangular muscle?
Three sided
how are muscles named?
- Location e.g. gluteus (maximus/minimus) is a buttock muscle.
- Size e.g. a longus muscle is longer than a brevis muscle (short).
- Shape.
- Orientation of fibres.
- Origin and insertion
- Number of heads e.g. biceps two heads, triceps three heads.
- Function e.g. abductor moves a structure away mid-line, adductor towards
what are the 4 parts of a lever in the body?
Lever= is a bone.
Fulcrum (F)= is a joint.
Load (L) or Resistance= force of gravity either in the form of the weight of the body parts or the weight of an object being lifted, pulled or pushed.
Effort (E) (or force) of muscle contraction is applied to the levers causing them to move (direction)
what are the 3 types of levers?
first class lever: L--F--E second class lever: E--L--F third class lever: F--E--L best way to remember: FLE123
