muscular system 4-gross muscular system. Flashcards
Neck muscles- sternocleidomastoid muscle movements
laterally flexes the head and neck to the same side/ rotates head to opposite side. Both contracting together flexes neck.
Neck muscles- trapezius muscle movements
Extends and laterally flexes neck.
Muscles moving the vertebral column-Erector Spinae muscle movements
they’re responsible for extending, laterally flexing and rotating the vertebral column.
Muscles of the Thorax- what is the thoracic cavity?
Rib cage cavity from neck to diaphragm.
Muscles of the Thorax- thoracic muscles are involved in what?
breathing.
Muscles of the Thorax- what are the 4 major groups associated with the rib cage?
Scalenes, external intercostals, internal intercostals and the transversus thoracis.
Muscles of the Thorax- what muscle causes the major movement produced during quiet breathing?
the Diaphragm
Muscles of the Thorax- how does the diagram cause inspiration?
◦ Dome shaped muscle.
◦ When it contracts, dome flattens slightly, causing the volume of the thoracic cavity to increase resulting in inspiration.
Muscles of the Thorax- what is the process of inspiration?
At rest/ quiet= Diaphragm
contracts, rib cage elevates via external intercostals.
Exercise/ activity= Diaphragm
contracts, scalenes elevates
first two ribs more forcefully.
Increase thoracic cavity volume.
Muscles of the Thorax- what is the process of expiration?
At rest/ quiet= Diaphragm
relaxes, muscle groups relax.
Exercise/ activity= Diaphragm relaxes, internal intercostals and the transversus thoracis
depress the ribs.
Decrease thoracic cavity
volume.
Muscles of the abdominal wall- Rectus Abdominis muscle movement
Flexes vertebral column, compresses abdomen.
Muscles of the abdominal wall- External and Internal abdominal obliques muscle movement
Flex and rotate vertebral column, compress abdomen
and depress thorax.
Muscles of the abdominal wall- Transversus
abdominis muscle movement
Compress abdomen.
Upper body/ Limb Muscles- deltoid muscle movements
Flexes & extends shoulder, abducts, medially & laterally
rotates arm.
Upper body/ Limb Muscles- Coracobrachialis muscle movements
Adducts the arm & flexes
shoulder.
Upper body/ Limb Muscles- Pectoralis Major muscle movements
Flexes shoulder, adducts and medially rotates arm (also pectoralis minor
underneath).
