Tibial Nerve Flashcards
Roots
L4-S3
Motor functions
Posterior compartment of the leg Popliteus Flexor hallucis longus Flexor digitorum longus Tibialis posterior Plantaris Soleus Gastrocnemius
Sensory functions
Skin on the posterolateral side of the leg (combines with common fibular to form sural)
Lateral side of the foot
Sole of the foot
Tarsal tunnel syndrome
Tibial nerve compression within tarsal tunnel
Osteoarthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Post-trauma ankle deformities
Patients complain of paraesthesia in ankle and sole of foot (can radiate up the leg slightly)
Aggravated by exercise, relieved by rest
Treatment - anti-inflammatory drugs or changes in footwear
Flexor retinaculum can also be cut surgically to release pressure
Damage to tibial nerve
Rare, often result of direct trauma, entrapment through a narrow space or compression over a long period
Results in loss of plantarflexion, loss of flexion of toes, weakened inversion (tibias anterior can still invert)
