Clavicle Flashcards
Anatomical position
Extends between sternum and acromion
Main functions
Attaches upper limb to trunk
Protects underlying neurovascular structures supplying upper limb
Transmits force from upper limb to axial skeleton
Orientation
Facing forward…
Medial aspect = convex
Lateral aspect = concave
Sternal end
Medial end
Large facet for articulation with manubrium at sternoclavicular joint
Inferior surface - rough oval depression for costoclavicular ligament
Shaft
Point of attachment for…
Trapezius
Subclavius
Point of origin for... Pectoralis major Sternocleidomastoid Sternohyoid Deltoid
Acromial end
Lateral end
Small facet for articulation with acromion at acromioclavicular
Conoid tubercle - attachment of conoid ligament (medial part of coracoclavicular ligament)
Trapezoid line - attachment of trapezoid ligament (lateral part of coracoclavicular ligament)
Fracture of clavicle
Most commonly fractured bone in the body
Result of fall onto shoulder or on outstretched hand
Suprascapular nerves may be damaged
These nerves innervate lateral rotators of upper limb - damage results in unopposed medial rotation of upper limb (waiters tip)
Most common point of clavicular fracture
Junction of medial 2/3 and lateral 1/3
Lateral end - displaced inferiorly (by weight of arm) and medially (by pec major)
Medial end - pulled superiorly by sternocleidomastoid muscle
