Superficial Fibular Nerve Flashcards
Roots
L4-S1
Motor functions
Innervates muscles in the lateral compartment of the leg
Fibularis longus
Fibularis brevis
Sensory functions
Vast majority of the skin over the dorsum of the foot (apart from the webbing between the hallux and the second digit)
Also supplies the anterior and lateral aspect of the inferior third of the leg
Superficial fibular nerve entrapment
Entrapment of the superficial peroneal nerve can cause pain and paraesthesia of the lower leg and dorsum of foot
Frequently arises from ankle sprains or twisting of the ankle
Can also be compressed by the deep fascia of the leg - surgical decompression is used to relieve symptoms
Direct damage of the superficial fibular nerve
Damaged by fracture of the fibula or by a perforating wound to the lateral side of the leg
May result in a loss of eversion, a loss of sensation over the dorsum of the foot and anterolateral aspect of the lower leg
