Deep Fibular Nerve Flashcards
Roots
L4 and L5
Motor functions
Innervates the muscles in the anterior compartment of the leg Tibialis anterior Extensor hallucis longus Extensor digitorum longus Fibularis tertius Also some of the intrinsic muscles of the foot Extensor digitorum brevis Extensor hallucis brevis
Sensory functions
Triangular region of skin between 1st and 2nd toes
Footdrop
Compression can cause the patient to lose the ability to dorsiflex and therefore unopposed plantarflexion occurs
Foot slaps the floor during walking as it cannot be lowered in a controlled manner
Patient develops an abnormal gait…
- Waddling gait - patient leans excessively to normal limb
- Swing-out gait - patient abducts the abnormal limb
- High steppage gait - patient flexes hip and knee excessively on abnormal limb
Reasons for compression…
- Leg muscles have been excessively used -> pain in anterior leg
- Tight-fitting shoes - compression beneath extensor retinaculum -> pain in dorsum of foot
