Femoral Nerve Flashcards
Roots
L2-L4
Motor functions
Pectineus, iliacus, sartorius - hip flexors
Quadriceps femoris - knee extenders
Sensory functions
Cutaneous branches to anteromedial thigh (anterior cutaneous branch of femoral nerve)
Terminal cutaneous branch supplies medial side of leg (saphenous nerve)
Stripping of the saphenous vein
Saphenous vein often stripped in those with problematic varicose veins
Long saphenous vein is accompanied by the saphenous nerve -> damage can cause pain, paraesthesia or complete loss of sensation on medial side of lower leg
Femoral nerve block
Indicated in patients requiring lower limb surgery but cannot tolerate general anaesthetic
Can be used as peri and post operative analgesia for patients with fractured neck of femur who can’t tolerate particular analgesics
