(Some Lovers Try Positions That They Can’t Handle)
Scaphoid fracture
Falling on outstretched hand
Pain in anatomical snuffbox
Blood supply distal to proximal so avascular necrosis can occur
Missed scaphoid fracture can lead to arthritis
Lunate fracture
Hyperextension at the wrist
Associated with damage to median nerve
Metacarpal bones
- Thumb
- Index finger
- Middle finger
- Ring finger
- Little finger
Each consists of base, shaft and head
Lateral and medial surfaces concave to allow attachment interossei muscles to attach
Boxer’s fracture
Fracture of 5th metacarpal neck
Clenched fist striking a hard object
Distal part displaced posteriorly - shortening of 5th finger
Bennett’s fracture
Fracture of 1st metacarpal base
Extends into the carpometacarpal joint
Caused by hyperabduction of the thumb
Phalanges
Thumb - proximal and distal phalanx
Digits - Proximal, middle and distal phalanges
