Subtalar Joint Flashcards
Articulating surfaces
Inferior surface of body of talus (posterior talar articular surface)
Superior surface of calcaneus (posterior calcaneal articular facet)
Stability
Joint capsule strengthened by fibrous layer
Posterior talocalcaneal ligament
Medial talocalcaneal ligament
Lateral talocalcaneal ligament
Interosseous talocalcaneal ligament binds talus and calcaneal together (majority of stability)
Movements
Eversion - lateral leg muscles
Inversion - tibialis anterior
Neurovasculature
Arterial supply - posterior tibial + fibular arteries
Nerve supply - plantar aspect - medial or lateral plantar nerve // dorsal aspect - deep fibular nerve
Calcaneal fracture
Crush type injuries, falling onto heel from a height
Comminuted fracture - breaks in many places
Shorter and wider in x-ray
Can cause chronic problems, arthritic joint, pain on inversion/eversion -> painful to walk on uneven ground
