Muscles of the Medial Thigh Flashcards
1
Q
Muscles
A
Gracilis Obturator externus Adductor brevis Adductor longus Adductor magnus
2
Q
Innervation
A
Obturator nerve (L2-L4)
3
Q
Arterial supply
A
Obturator artery
4
Q
Adductor magnus
A
- Origin - adductor part - inferior rami of pubis and the rami of ischium / hamstring part - ischial tuberosity
- Attachment - adductor part - linea aspera of femur / hamstring part - adductor tubercle on the distal and medial side of the femur
- Actions - adduction of the thigh / adductor portion - also flexes the thigh / hamstring portion - also extends the thigh
- Innervation - adductor part - obturator nerve / hamstring part - tibial nerve (L4-S3)
5
Q
Adductor longus
A
- Origin - pubis
- Attachment - linea aspera of the femur
- Actions - adduction and medial rotation of the thigh
- Innervation - obturator nerve
6
Q
Adductor brevis
A
- Origin - body of pubis and inferior pubic rami
- Attachment - linea aspera on posterior surface of femur
- Actions - adduction of the thigh
- Innervation - obturator nerve
7
Q
Obturator externus
A
- Origin - membrane of the obturator foramen and adjacent bone
- Attachment - posterior aspect of the greater trochanter
- Actions - laterally rotates thigh
- Innervation - obturator nerve
8
Q
Gracilis
A
- Origin - inferior rami of pubis and body of pubis
- Attachment - medial surface of the tibia inbetween tendons of sartorius and semitendinosus
- Actions - adduction of thigh and hip and flexion of leg at the knee
- Innervation - obturator nerve
9
Q
Injury to adductor muscles
A
Strain of these muscles is what is colloquially known as groin strain
Proximal part of muscles most likely affected
Groin injuries usually occur in sports that require explosive movements or extreme stretching
RICE protocol - rest, ice, compression and elevation
