A

Enlarged head, contains facet for articulation with lateral condyle of tibia
Common fibular nerve can be found on the posterior lateral surface of the fibular neck

A

Lateral malleolus - continuation of lateral surface

More prominent than medial malleolus and can be palpated at ankle on lateral leg

Fibular fractures

A

Lateral malleolus prone to fracture

  • Forced external rotation - force of talus against lateral malleolus causes a spiral fracture
  • Foot being twisted outwards (eversion) - talus presses against lateral malleolus, causes transverse fracture
