Fibula Flashcards
1
Q
Anatomical location
A
Makes up one of the two bones of the leg
Found laterally to the tibia
2
Q
Function
A
To act as an attachment for muscles (not weight bearing)
3
Q
Proximal fibula
A
Enlarged head, contains facet for articulation with lateral condyle of tibia
Common fibular nerve can be found on the posterior lateral surface of the fibular neck
4
Q
Fibular shaft
A
3 surfaces (anterior, lateral, posterior) Leg is split into 3 compartments, each surface faces respective compartment
5
Q
Distal fibula
A
Lateral malleolus - continuation of lateral surface
More prominent than medial malleolus and can be palpated at ankle on lateral leg
6
Q
Fibular fractures
A
Lateral malleolus prone to fracture
- Forced external rotation - force of talus against lateral malleolus causes a spiral fracture
- Foot being twisted outwards (eversion) - talus presses against lateral malleolus, causes transverse fracture
