levothyroxine

LT4
- Taken on empty stomach
- Taken at least one hour away from food
- Initial therapy for individuals with no functioning thyroid or severe secondary hypothyroidism
- HL = 7 days
- In older people = titrate up to effective dose to see if it effects their other meds (it can affect other medications)
- Re-evaluation at 8 week intervals until stable

- Most active form of thyroid hormone - acts on nuclear receptors in most tissues
- Not commonly prescribed drug

propylthiouracil

thioamine - inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis
short HL - take 3 times a day
use for hyperthyroidism
AE: can cuase lupus like syndrome, may cuase pancytopenia (dont use on patienst already on leukosupression)
