?autoimmune response against an autoantigen, possibly TSH receptor
=> retro-orbital inflammation
inflammation results in glycosaminoglycan and collagen deposition in the orbital muscles

A
STOP smoking
radioiodine may increase inflammation

Features of thyroid eye disease
A
- exophthalmos
- conjunctival oedema
- optic disc swelling
- ophthalmoplegia
- inability to close the eyelids
=> sore, dry eyes/keratopathy

Management of thyroid eye disease
A
- topical lubricants
- steroids
- radiotherapy
- surgery

When should patients with thyroid eye disease be urgently referred to the ophthalmologist
A
- Unexplained deterioration in vision
- change in intensity or quality of colour vision
- history of eye suddenly ‘popping out’ (globe subluxation)
- obvious corneal opacity
- cornea still visible when the eyelids are closed
- disc swelling
