What is conservation?
Refers to children’s understanding that the amount remains the same even when that container changes shape.
How did Piaget show this?
He carried out tests to show the stage when children begin to reason and think logically.
What happened in these tests?
A child would be shown two identical glasses with the same amount of water in each. Then water form one glass would be poured into a tall, narrow beaker. The would say which has more water in it.
What would the test show?
Children under 7 years old cannot conserve because they cannot think about more than one aspect of a situation at one time. However at the operational stage at 7, children can think logically so can understand that they have the same amount of water.
What is egocentrism?
Piaget believed that, until children are 7 years old, they only see things from their own perspective. He used the Swiss mountain test to prove this.
