What age does puberty happen for girls?
11-13 years
What age does puberty happen for boys?
13-15 years
When does puberty start?
When a hormone in the brain sends a signal to the pituitary gland, which releases hormones that stimulates the ovaries in girls and the testes in boys to produce sex hormones.
What hormone is produced by the testes?
Testosterone
What hormones are produced by the ovaries?
oestrogen and progesterone
What does testosterone stimulate?
Growth of the penis, testes, pubic hair growth, the development of muscle and lowering of the voice
What do oestrogen and progesterone stimulate?
They stimulate growth of the breasts and reproductive system and helps to regulate the menstrual cycle.
What are primary sexual characteristics?
These are the processes that are related to the sex organs that are present at birth and mature when sex hormones are released.
What are the primary sexual characteristics for girls?
menstruation begins, uterus and vagina grows and ovulation occurs
What are the primary sexual characteristics for boys?
penis enlarges, prostate gland produces secretion, teste enlarges and produce sperm
What are secondary sexual characteristics?
these are not necessary for reproduction. They develop when sex hormones are released
What are the secondary sexual characteristics for girls?
growth of armpit and pubic hair, increased layers of fat under the skin, breast enlarge, growth spurt and hips widen
What are the secondary sexual characteristics for boys?
growth of facial hair, growth of armpit, chest and pubic hair, increased muscle, growth spurt and Larynx( voice box) grows causing voice to deepen
