Factors affecting development - Genetic Factors Flashcards
What is genetic factors?
Factors that affect physical growth, development, health and appereance
What is genetic predisposition ?
Health conditions can arise from defective inherited genes.
What happens if a defective gene is passed on?
Increases the likelihood of developing a condition, which depends upon whether the defective gene is recessive or dominant.
What mean if the defective gene is dominant?
It only needs to be passed on by one parent and means that they are most definitely going to get the condition
Examples of conditions that are caused by dominat genes
Brittle bone disease and Huntington’s disease
What mean if the defective gene is Recessive?
Must be passed on by two parents for the child to develop the condition.
Examples of conditions that are caused by recessive genes
Cystic fibrosis, phenyiketonuria(PKU), Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Whats a carrier?
If the defective gene is passed from one parent only
Down syndrome
Individuals have an extra copy of chromosome 21, which causes characteristic facial features, growth delay and intellectual disability
Colour blindness
Caused by mutations in the x chromosome, so is more common in males. it makes it difficult to distinguish colours.
Klinefelter Syndrome
Boys have an extra x chromosome, causing problems during, or a delay in puberty.
