What is the difference between management and leadership?
Managers have the official role as a leader, but leaders also have vision and can motivate staff towards the overall goal
What are three characteristics of a good leader?
Inspiring, Resilient, Have vision
What are the four leadership styles?
Autocratic, Democratic, Laissez faire, Paternalistic
Define Autocratic Leadership
Keep most of the authority to themselves, they don’t delegate much or share information with employees
What are three features of autocratic leadership?
Make decisions independently with little or no input, Clear division between management and workers, Top down/one way communication
Define Democratic Leadership
Takes the views of their subordinates into account when making decisions, managers discuss what needs to be done and employees are involved in the decision
What are three features of democratic leadership?
Two-way communication, Emphasis on delegation of authority, Employees have greater involvement in decision making
Define Laissez Faire
Managers give employees the freedom to make decisions
What are three features of laissez faire leadership?
Effective when staff are ready and willing to take on responsibility, Leader has little input into day-to-day decision making, Employees have freedom to do what they think is best
Define Paternalistic Leadership
Believes they know what is best for employees, tends to tell employees what to do but will explain their decisions. They are concerned about the social needs of employees
What are three features of paternalistic leadership?
Leader decides what is best for employees, Softer form of authoritarian leadership, Provides clear expectations on what needs to be done
