Define Recruitment and Selection
Filling in job vacancies by defining the job, attracting suitable candidates and selecting those best suited to fill it
Define Labour Turnover
The number of staff leaving the business as a % of the number employed
Define Training
Work-related education, when employees learn new skills or develop the skills which they already possess
Define Induction Training
Familiarises employees with key aspects of their jobs and their employer e.g. health and safety policies and payment arrangements
What does induction training aim to do?
Make employees as fully productive as soon as possible
Define Off the Job Training
Employees leave their normal place of work to receive training, either within the firm or by using an external organisation e.g. college or university
Define On the Job Training
Employees acquire or develop skills without leaving their usual workplace e.g. being guided through an activity by a more experienced member of staff
Define Job Description
Related directly to the nature of the position rather than the person required to fill it
Define Person Specification
Relates to the abilities, qualifications and qualities required
What are three examples of things on a job description?
Title of the post, Who to report to/who responsible for, Details of main tasks/duties
What are three examples of things on a person specification?
Necessary skills/experience, Education/professional skills required, Suitable personality
Define Internal Recruitment
Filling a job vacancy by selecting a person who is already employed in the business
Define External Recruitment
Filling a job vacancy by someone who isn’t already employed, from outside the business
What are three benefits of internal recruitment?
Employees are already known, Promotion opportunities can motivate, Recruitment process is usually quicker
What are three drawbacks of internal recruitment?
May reduce the amount of new ideas, Leaves a vacancy elsewhere in the business to be filled, Not always possible due to firm size etc.
