what happened in the war of 1794-9

A
  • Austrian Netherlands were defeated by the Jacobins in 1794
  • United Provinces were defeated in 1795
  • They form to become the Batavian Republic- good for taxation, spreading the Revolution
  • 6 April 1795- conquered the Rhineland— Prussia made peace with France (given the Left Bank)
  • July 1795- defeated Spain — Spain and France allies
  • 1796- Portugal made peace with France— 100 million livres in indemnities to France
  • 1797- Austria defeated by Napoleon with his Italian Campaign — indemnities balanced the budget— 200m livres and German states — 16m livres— Cisalpine Republic, a sister republic

  • By 1796, France remained at war with only GB, Austria and Piedmont-Sardinia

April 1796: Piedmont-Sardinia withdrew’ by the Armistice of Cherasco

PS gave Savoy and Nice to France

  • 1797- Austria defeated by Napoleon with his Italian Campaign — indemnities balanced the budget— 200m livres and German states — 16m livres— Cisalpine Republic, a sister republic

key events Egyptian Campaign?

A
  • Defeated the Egyptians in the Battle of the Pyramids, near Cairo, July 21 - assured his mastery over the country
  • Nelson destroyed the French fleet at anchor in Aboukir Bay in August, cutting NB off from France (can’t get back and no supplies)
  • Angered various European leaders
    > Austria took advantage of NB’s involvement in Egypt to bring together Britain, Russia, Ottoman Empire, Portugal and several of the German and Italian states in a new collation in 1789-99
    > 1799 - several invasions - NB received reports of this

significance of E.campaign?

A
  • Egypt a failure but Napoleon still cheered as hero - shows how effective he was at propaganda
  • As Napoleon was away couldn’t be held accountable for failures of NB
  • Strengthened other countries in a Second Coalition.
  • Consistently undermined the Directory as they had no real authority.
