- kings dismissal of Necker on 11 July seemed to confirm popular fears that the King was seeking ways to prevent reform and go back on his promises
- poor harvest and increasing bread prices
- Paris was 20km from Versailles, pamphlets and newspapers were widely available

A
- 12-13 July rumours spread and mobs started raiding sword-smiths and gun shops to arm themselves in case of a royal assault
- prisons and factories and the monastery of Saint-Lazare was attacked and the city was in a state of anarchy
- some Parisian electors met at Hotel de Ville and set up a committee to take control of the city and organised the establishment of the NG to police the city, restore order and perfect property and Parisians
- 14 July a crowd of around 8000 descended on Les Invalides where 32,000 muskets and some artillery were found. However, they needed gunpowder so they went to the Bastille accompanied by the NG and PC
- De Launay was captured and his head was put on a pike
- the King was persuaded to go in the 17th July with members of the Assembly to address the Parisians from the steps of the Hotel de Ville. he had the revolutionary cockade alongside the new mayor of Paris Bailley and Lafayette and announced the reinstatement of Necker and his acceptance of the NA, PC, NG.
