1801, 129 leaders arrested, dry guillotined

wrongly blamed on a bomb plot in the ‘infernal machine’ in Dec 1800

civil servants thought to be Jacobin sympathisers were also dismissed

After 1800, it was very difficult and dangerous to have any association with the Jacobins

how did NB use repression to deal with the royalists?

A

Sep 1800, NB responded in letter saying the Comte de Provence that he should not come back to France and he would take drastic measures to ensure so.
dealt firmly with royalist outbraks and protesting about conscription
use of military tribunals
Brittany, 6000 Chouans prisoners taken and 750 shot in 1800
NB extended remit of police and his prefects to report
1804 NB’s patience had run out when his spy network reported news the Duc d’Enghien was in touch with emigres
he was found guilty and shot in a ditch and royalists gave NB little trouble afterwards

how did he use reconciliament to deal with royalists?

A

he offered a generous amnesty to rebels in the west who were prepared to lay down their arms and give their support – helped to win over some of the key royalist leaders, particularly when NB promised to protect the Catholic religion

overtures to emigres and refractory priests and offered rewards and posts to those who prepared to support him

A

criticism was controlled by curbs of press freedom
M of Police only allowed the printing, publication and distribution of 13 newspaper exclusively devoted to science, arts, lit, commerce, announcements and public notices
no news newspapers are published
heavy censorship and propaganda
