why was there a RiV
A
- rural, conservative and strongly Catholic area with a large number of refractory priests- a breeding place for rebellion
- uprising began as a protest against the levy for 300,000 men which was being carried out in Angers in March 1793.

A
- a Catholic and Royal Army of the Vendee was formed and on 14 March Cholet, a major city in the area was seized.
- massacres of local officials, jurying priests and NG and guerilla warfare spread through the countryside

how did convention react
A
The convention sent 30,000 men from the front to the area in May in an attempt to control the rebellion.

how had the rebel advanced
A
it continued to spread and by June the rebels had seized a number of the bridges over the Loire taken Angers and Saumur advancing to Le Mans heading for Paris

how did the NC further do something
A
- the same month the Federalist Revolts which put pressure on the convention on 1 August they decreed the destruction of the Vendee
- 100,000 arrived in Nantes on 6th September but failed to crush it until October when the Vendeams suffered several defeats and by Dec it was chrushed
