The pope ordered that the priests should stop organising trial by ordeal.
What was the trial by ordeal replaced by?
Replaced by the trial of jury (12 men who observed the trial and decided whether guilty or innocent at the end).
What did church courts offer criminals?
They offered them an opportunity to reform.
What did Henry II try to limit?
The churches power.
What was the benefit of the clergy?
Only the Church was allowed to punish priests and the Church did not execute people. This was known as the benefit of clergy.
What were the church’s punishments?
-Enforced pilgrimage
-Confession and apology at mass.

A verse called Psalm 51 which people would learn to be see as innocent.
What was sanctuary?
A safe hiding place for people accused of crimes.
What happens it the clergy agree that the crime was fair?
Then the accused had to swear an oath to leave the country within 40 days.
What happens if the person does not leave within 40 days?
Would be considered as an outlaw.

In 1536 under the law of Henry VIII.
