What was the goal of the gunpowder plot?
Set of an explosion to kill the protestant king (James 1) at parliament on 5 Nov 1605. Wanted to replace him with his daughter Princess Elizabeth who was a better leader.
What was the Act of Uniformity 1559?
When Protestantism had been the official religion.
What happened to Elizabeth in 1570?
She was excommunicated (kicked out) from the catholic church.
What happened to the Catholics during this time?
They were prevented from practicing their religion and were punished if they did.
What was compulsory and what would happen if they did not do it?
Attending the protestant church. If Catholics refused they were fined and seen as criminals.
What was the the plan?
Conspirators met on 20 May 1604 and packed the cellar with 36 barrels of gunpowder.
How did the plot fail?
20 October Lord Monteagle received a letter telling him not to attend parliament. He gave this to Robert Cecil (king’s spymaster). Westminster was searched and Guy Fawkes was found with the gunpowder.
What happened in the questioning, trial and punishment?
Guy Fawkes and his conspirators were tortured with the method known as the rack. This is when you stretch the body.
After 12 days of his arrest, he confessed. Trial began in Jan 1066. Found guilty of treason. Sentenced to death by being hung, drawn and quartered.
What were the long-term consequences of the gunpowder plot?
The king’s book included an account by king James about how the plot encouraged anti-Catholic attitudes.
1605 Thanksgiving act ordered that 5th Nov should be celebrated every year.
1606 Popish Recusants Act forced Catholics to take allegiance to the English Crown to attend church or pay a fine.
