Where did the Anglo-Saxons live?
In hamlets or in villages.
Why was the crime rate low?
People had a strong sense of duty towards their community.
What was Tithings?
Shires which were split into areas and then called hundreds and then divided into 10 tithings.
What was Hue and Cry?
When a victim or witness shouted to alert others. Anyone who heard it was expected to help.
What is an oath?
When you could swear innocence under oath and call upon oath helpers.
How can you decide if the person is innocent or guilty?
Evidence of the suspect’s guilt was given. If the jury could not decide then it was up to God by doing a trial by ordeal.
What were the crimes against the person?
Assault, murder and physical harm.
What were the crimes against property?
Theft, robbery and arson.
What was the name given to the person that carried out decisions made by the court?
A reeve.
What was the capital punishment?
Death penalty.
What was corporal punishment?
Retribution and deterrent-put people off.
What was Weregild?
A fine that is paid to the victim’s family to reduce blood feuds..
What is treason/arson?
Crimes against the authority. Punishable by death.
What was the punishment for public disorder?
The stocks and pillory.
What was the punishments for assault/counterfeiting coins?
Maiming (chopping off body parts)/ chopping off hands.
