What were the developments in policing since 1900?
-Every area across Britain had its own police force.
-200 separate forces.
-Women recruited in the 1920s.
-1947 Police Training College was set up to train new recruits.
-Increase use of science and technology.
How was crime prevented?
It was prevented by breathalysers, speed cameras, CCTV, mass video surveillance and biometric screening (fingerprints, eye patterns etc).
How was crime solved?
Improved communications, forensic science, data management and improved computer software.
Neighbourhood watch.
-Local committee of people who raise awareness about crime and encourage neighbours to keep an eye on each other’s property.
-Set up in 1982.
-1980s increase in crime and society keen to reduce it.
Fraud squad.
-1946.
Tackle crime in business and the stock market.
-Evolved to tackle high-value crimes like art theft too.
-Now known as specialist, organised and economic crime command.
Specialist drug-trade units.
-1971 misuse of drugs act passed.
-Policed by special operations units that disrupt criminal activity and organisations.
-Monitor known drug users.
-National crime agency 2013 tackles drug trafficking into the UK and large-scale production in the UK.

-By the 1950s most police forces had dog units.
